A passport bro is a Western man who goes abroad to find a girlfriend or a wife, often in Southeast Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe, and who tends to say dating at home stopped working for him. Some men wear the label with pride; critics use it as an insult. What matters more is how he treats one woman.

Women in Thailand have been talking about these men for years, mostly without the English label. We read 30 threads on Pantip, a Thai forum anyone can read without an account, and counted what 296 women posting there in Thai wrote about Western men who come to Thailand looking for a girlfriend or a wife. This is not a study of passport bros: the women wrote about the men, not about the term, 246 of the 296 wrote before 2020, about when the term began to spread, and only 90 say they have or had a Western partner, so most are giving their view of other people. Read the count as the women’s side of a closely related story: what they think draws these men, what they say marks one who is serious, and what they say it costs the women who date them.
Passport bro meaning
Passport bro means a Western man who goes abroad with finding a partner as a main reason for the trip, often after deciding that women at home are not interested in him or want too much. “Passport” is the trip; “bro” makes it a group of men swapping advice online. A man who moves abroad for work and falls for a colleague is not what most people mean; the label is about why he went.
