If a woman you met online is scamming you, the clearest sign is that money comes up before you've met: help with a bill, a ticket or a fee, or an investment offer. Warning lists add fast feelings, a move off the app and a camera that never works. One sign proves little; several before you've met say more.

If you’re working out how to tell if a woman is scamming you, start here: you don’t need proof that she’s a scammer to pause a payment, and you don’t need to accuse her to check her story. Start with what she’s asking you to do, not which country her profile names. If you’ve already sent money, skip ahead to the section headed “I already sent money to a scammer”.
How to spot a romance scammer: the steps a scam often runs in
Read the warning signs as stages: building trust, making checks harder, then finding a route for your money. The UK’s official warning list names the same signs: feelings that develop very fast, excuses not to meet or to avoid live video calls, and talk of investments, emergencies or travel costs.1 The outline below is ours: it brings the agencies’ warnings together, and not every scam has every step or runs them in this order.

- Fast feelings. Love, destiny and plans together within days or weeks. A script recovered by Australia’s federal investigators from a scam centre had a backstory, affectionate lines and a daily plan to keep the target talking for up to seven days.2 Warmth is what a script is made of, so warmth alone tells you nothing either way.
- Off the dating app. A move to LINE, WhatsApp or Telegram, where the app’s moderators can’t see the chat, and removing her profile no longer ends it. Many people who reported losses to the FTC said the other person hurried them onto a messaging app.3
- No live face, no meeting. The camera is broken, the signal is bad, she’s at work. A trip gets planned, then something happens. The woman in stolen photos can’t turn up, though a scam can still send someone real.
- A route for your cash. A hospital bill, a ticket, a visa fee, a new phone so the video call can work, a fee to release a parcel or gift she says she’s sent you, or an offer to teach you crypto or gold trading.
- Fees to cash out. In the investment version, an app shows profits, and taking them out needs a tax, a fee or an unlock charge; the FBI describes demands for taxes and fees at withdrawal, followed by recovery scams.4
Find the latest step your conversation has reached. Steps one and two can happen in a genuine relationship too. A camera that fails once is life; a camera that fails every time, and a request for cash soon after, is a pattern. Step four before you’ve met is the point to say no to the money and then check, whatever the reason given. Step five is a warning sign that needs no second opinion: send nothing more.
That outline comes from official warnings. We also read what people say when it happens to them or to someone close. On Ask MetaFilter, an English question forum, and Pantip, a Thai one, we read 66 threads and found 21 accounts of someone met online who asked for money, a fee or an investment, or looked set to; 13 are told by the person caught up in it and 8 by a relative or a friend. 17 of the 21 had a money route: a fee to release a gift or parcel in 6, an investment in 5, a plea for an item, a bill or a ticket in 3, and a visa fund, a paid “task” and blackmail with a recording in 1 each. In the other 4, nothing had been asked yet.
We found these by searching for scam words, so they show what the ask looked like, not how often a match turns out to be a scam, and they’re the writers’ and answerers’ readings: we didn’t confirm any of them with a bank or the police.
